VOLUME 3, ISSUE 9                                                               October 14, 2011

From Our Superintendent, Merida Brooks

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

There are 77 t-shirts hanging on poles in this garden outside a church on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Each represents a student that was KILLED in the 2010-2011 school year in the Chicago school system.

Oh, Father God, we cry out for this generation of young people! Father, they have been so left to themselves without Your intended "umbrellas of protection" ~ their parents and the truth provided in Your Word. Our culture stubbornly continues in its attempt to eliminate all traces of You, the Most High God, as well as perverting the truth of the Christian foundation laid in the establishment of this great nation. We have grown cold to the value of life and the primary purpose of the family being the passing of a Christian heritage to the next generation. Children are considered an inconvenience rather than a treasure. Parents choose their own personal happiness rather than the long-term well being of their own children. The acquisition of "things" has become more important than the investment in the development of character.

Father God, as we pause to consider these 77 t-shirts, may we not fail to acknowledge our deep dependence upon You, as parents, as Westminster staff, faculty and administrators. Oh, Father God, we desperately need You, as our wisdom, strength, courage, and understanding. Wisdom to discern the times and to know what we should do on behalf of this generation; strength to not choose ourselves or the easy road, rather to do the hard thing in front of us as an investment into the lives of our children and students; courage to follow through when these very ones lack the eyes to see the thing that is for their long-term best good; and understanding that in all things You are also working in us to conform us the image of Your Son Jesus.

Father, we are exceedingly grateful for the provision You have made enabling both, our parents to partake, and us to offer a Christian school environment where parents are championed and the truth of Your Word is exalted in all things Westminster. May we be faithful stewards of what You have given and not "hide it under a bushel." Send out Your Crusaders, Lord, send them out far and wide to propagate Your victorious message throughout our nation and this world! Unleash the power You place within each one by Your Holy Spirit at salvation and protect them with Your angels and the full armor of God.

Oh, how we love You. We praise You for Your provision, protection, presence, peace and purpose at Westminster Christian Academy. We lift these 77 families before Your throne, praying that each will cry out to You and allow You to be the comfort of their hearts, and come to full surrender to Who You are. In the powerful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Get family members and friends to clip for you, too! We collect all year, but send in our first batch of Box Tops in November, so be sure to send in your box tops today!

Elementary Soccer

Elementary Soccer has been a part of WCA for 25+ years, with WCA being one of the founding members of the Acadiana Soccer Association.  Soccer tends to be the perfect sport for these 4 - 12 year olds as it helps them develop balance and coordination while being in a safe, fun, running environment. Definitely a better alternative to sitting around the TV! Who knows, a future star may be in your home. Former WCA elementary and high school players: Corita Kraemer, Quentin Pitre and Lamar Smith are all currently on scholarship playing college soccer.

Teams from the Opelousas and Lafayette campuses compete on Saturdays in the fall and spring with 9 other schools from the Acadiana area. This year, the Crusaders have six teams from Opelousas and six teams from Lafayette - approximately 150 players. All of these teams are coached by volunteer parents with some present and former Crusader Soccer players included as well.  We are grateful for their sacrifice to teach not only their own children, but others, too.  We cannot thank these volunteers enough for the sacrifice they make to develop soccer skills, life skills and values to not only their own children, but to others.  Their constant motto, Soli Deo Gloria, is evidenced throughout this long-standing WCA program.

retreatFreshman Retreat
The Freshman Retreat was held at Calvary Baptist Church of Opelousas.  Mr. Stuart Amidon led the freshmen in praise and worship followed by Mrs. Brooks'  "Brooks' Challenge" to all the freshmen.  Ask your child about it.  Mr. Allan Myers also spoke to the group.  Coach Todd Thompson, Dean of Students, challenged the freshmen to set academic goals and reminded them of the competition for scholarships.  The class wrote down their goals for high school which they will revisit during their Senior Retreat.  This retreat ended with pizza party.

8th Grade Louisiana History Project
For extra credit in 8th grade Louisiana history, students were given the opportunity to make dolls out of Spanish moss. Students in Louisiana history are currently studying the State's Indian tribes and the moss doll project was intended to recreate dolls made by the Houma Indians of southeast Louisiana. Like the Houma, students used Spanish moss to make the main body of their doll and used other trinkets found around the house like coins, buttons, string, yarn, etc. to decorate the doll and add features such as eyes. Students who took advantage of this opportunity were very creative and constructed a variety of unique and authentic looking Houma style moss dolls.

Calvary Preschool
School life is vibrant on our Calvary campus! In recent days, students at Calvary participated in Parents' Club Trike-a-thon, sang patriotic songs, and are enjoying daily classroom activities.

AP English Literature Comes to Life

The Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition students have been studying the Middle Ages and Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.  As part of their study of The Canterbury Tales, each student selected a character from the Prologue to present physically to the class.  In these physical character sketches, the students taught their peers about the characters' physical, moral, and mental characteristics as well as Chaucer's likely intent when creating the character.

Crusader Football

The Crusader Football Team went on the road last Friday night and claimed a 50-6 win over North Central. The defense led the way for WCA, holding the Hurricanes to -5 yards of total offense on the night. Five different Crusaders scored during the game, moving the team to 4-2 overall, and 3-0 in district action.

This Friday night, the Saders host the St. Edmund's Blue Jays at Crusader Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. The Blue Jays are also 3-0 in District and 5-1 for the season, so Friday night's game will be huge in determining the District Champion at the end of the year. Let's wear blue, show in big numbers, and cheer the Crusaders on the victory.
